Pesticides in Soft Drinks: Major soft drink companies have sent out notifications detailing the different types of pesticides and their levels in the beverages they market in India. In 2003, representatives from Pepsi and Coca-Cola reached an agreement in the Supreme Court, acknowledging that their soft drinks contain pesticides. The Supreme Court subsequently instructed them to label hazardous materials on their containers. Following this, the beverage companies released newspaper advertisements disclosing the pesticide levels found in their sodas.
The Government then stepped in and confirmed that the soft drinks available for sale contain pesticides. They also claimed that in India, pesticides are found in both vegetables and groundwater. (I sent my article to various TV channels and newspapers on 26.8.06).
Shortly thereafter, the government took action in favor of foreign companies, claiming that the methods employed in CSE analyses are questionable! Why does the media not consider this to be newsworthy?

The Indian government has evidently lost confidence in India’s ability to be self-sufficient in multiple sectors and has simply acquiesced to the demands of the United States, thereby willingly moving towards a form of Neo Slavery for the Indian Nation.
In 2003 and once more in 2006, the New Delhi-based non-governmental organization (NGO) Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) published reports indicating that its laboratory analyses detected residues of various harmful pesticides, such as lindane, DDT, malathion, and chlorpyrifos, in prominent soft drink brands, including Coca-Cola and PepsiCo products available in India.
Key findings from the 2006 Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) study on pesticides in colas-II:
• A cocktail of 3-6 pesticides was present in all samples.
• Lindane (a confirmed carcinogen) levels were over 54 times above the BIS standard; in one Coca-Cola sample from Kolkata, it was 140 times higher.
• Chlorpyrifos (a known neurotoxin) levels were 47 times higher; a Coca-Cola sample from Mumbai had a 200 times higher level.
• Heptachlor, banned in India, was found in 71 per cent of the samples, at levels 4 times higher than BIS standards.
• Average amount of pesticide residues found in all the samples was 11.85 parts per billion (ppb) — 24 times higher than the BIS standards for total pesticides in soft drinks (0.5 ppb).
• Pepsi cola contained 30 times higher residues on an average.
• Coca-Cola contained 27 times higher residues on an average.
Moreover, research suggests that soft drinks available in the US and other nations did not exhibit the same pesticide residues during the controversy. However, the matter was being downplayed by implying that the issue was limited to the water sources at that time. Currently, it is contended that the testing methodology employed by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) to analyze the samples is flawed.
